Acceptable Use Policy
The short version
- Patra is for mail between people: your team writing to customers, suppliers and each other.
- No bulk or marketing mail, no cold outreach, no purchased or scraped lists, no spam, phishing or malware.
- Only send as addresses that belong to your organisation.
- Sending limits protect everyone's delivery. Abuse leads to suspension.
This policy is part of our Terms of Service. It applies to everyone who uses Patra, including every user on a customer's domain. Customers are responsible for making sure their users follow it.
1. What the service is for
Person-to-person business correspondence written by signed-in users, for example:
- replies to customers;
- quotes and invoices sent to a client;
- messages within your team;
- notifications to people who have a business relationship with you and expect to hear from you.
2. What is not allowed
- Bulk or marketing mail, including newsletters, promotions and campaigns, even to people who agreed to receive them. Use a dedicated email marketing service for those.
- Cold outreach and lead generation: unsolicited sales, prospecting or "growth" mail to people who have no relationship with you, even when each message is written or sent one at a time.
- Purchased, rented, scraped or harvested address lists, and mail to people who have not given you their address.
- Spam: unsolicited mail sent to many recipients, or mail designed to get around filters.
- Phishing, fraud and scams, including fake invoices, requests for credentials and impersonation of other people or organisations.
- Malware, or links to it.
- Forged or misleading headers. You may only send as addresses on domains that belong to your organisation. The service enforces this.
- Harassment, threats and hateful content, and content that exploits or harms children. We report the latter to the authorities.
- Unlawful content or activity under Indian law or the law that applies to you, and content that infringes someone else's rights.
- Attacks on the service, for example attempts to break in, overload it, probe other customers' data or get around limits and security controls.
- Getting around limits, for example by spreading mail over extra accounts, mailboxes or domains to send more than the limits below allow. Unlimited mailboxes and domains are for real people and real businesses.
- Email-to-SMS gateways and other automated relays that turn our mail into texts or messages on other networks.
- Account farming: using mailboxes to sign up for accounts on other services in bulk or automatically.
- Test floods: large volumes of test mail to made-up or nonexistent addresses. Test with a catch-all on a domain you control instead.
- Reselling the service without a written agreement with us.
3. Sending limits
These limits keep delivery reliable for everyone. They may change, and we will announce significant changes in advance.
| Limit | Current value |
|---|---|
| Recipients per message | 50 |
| Recipients per address per hour | 400 |
| Recipients per address per day | 1,000 |
| Recipients per account per day | Depends on the plan: 500 (Small), 750 (Medium), 1,000 (Large), 1,500 (100 GB), 2,500 (200 GB), 3,000 (300 GB), 4,000 (400 GB), 5,000 (500 GB), 5,500 (600 GB) |
Very large messages may be refused. New accounts cannot send until we have reviewed them, usually within one business day.
Fair use. Domains and mailboxes are unlimited for real use, up to 1,000 mailboxes and 100 domains per account. Ask support if you need more.
4. Keep your mail healthy
- Keep your domain's DNS records (DKIM, DMARC and MX) in place. The admin console alerts you if they change.
- Use strong, unique passwords and keep devices up to date. A compromised mailbox is the most common source of spam.
- Remove addresses that bounce, and stop writing to people who ask you to stop.
5. How we enforce this policy
We use automated signals such as bounces, spam complaints, sending patterns and authentication results to detect abuse. When we investigate a specific report or incident, we may review message details and, where necessary, message content.
Depending on how serious the problem is, we may:
- warn you;
- pause sending for a mailbox or domain;
- suspend a mailbox or your account;
- end the service under the Terms of Service.
We act immediately where needed to stop harm. Where we can, we tell you what happened and how to fix it. We may also report illegal activity to the authorities.
6. Reporting abuse
To report spam, phishing or other abuse sent from a Patra address, write to abuse@trypatra.com. Please include the full message headers. For legal complaints, contact our Grievance Officer as described in the Terms of Service.
